Pet dental care
Bad breath is more than a nuisance. It can be a sign of periodontal disease, which damages teeth, gums and bone.
Periodontal disease is largely preventable with regular brushing, cleanings and dental exams. We recommend a dental visit once a year to keep your pet's teeth and gums clean and healthy.
Our veterinarians do a thorough dental exam based on American Veterinary Medical Association standards, and we grade what we find on a five-point scale:
- Grade 1: minimal tartar and healthy gums. Typical of pets under 3 years old.
- Grade 2: plaque on some or most teeth, but no gingivitis yet.
- Grade 3: possible infection of at least one tooth, with visible gingivitis and tartar. You have probably noticed the bad breath.
- Grade 4: possible gum recession, with signs of infection and bleeding gums. You are probably avoiding pet kisses.
- Grade 5: obvious gum recession on many teeth and infection through most of the mouth.
What happens during a pet dental cleaning?
We perform a professional dental cleaning under anesthesia, with a complete evaluation of your pet's teeth, gums and mouth. Digital dental x-rays show what sight alone cannot: problems below the gum line. If we find periodontal disease, we build a personalized treatment plan.
Safety comes first. We require pre-anesthetic bloodwork, and your pet is monitored throughout the procedure.
