Nutrition
Feeding cats
Feeding cats is different from feeding dogs. Cats cannot metabolize carbohydrates well, so dry food often leads to obesity and raises the risk of diabetes.

Feeding dogs
Choosing a dog food can be daunting, with hundreds of choices on the market. We typically recommend the Purina Pro Plan line, though there are several good options.

Reading a pet food label
Ingredient lists can be confusing and misleading, and a label rarely tells you the overall quality of the food.

Grain-free diets
We discourage grain-free diets for dogs. Research shows a potential link between these diets and non-hereditary dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and it shows no nutritional advantage to going grain free.

Home cooking
You can prepare your pet's meals at home, and the best results come from a sound nutritional plan. Pets need a diet balanced in protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals, and cats and dogs need different amounts.

Tips for anxious pets
Cats
Cats that get uneasy on the way to the clinic travel best in a soft carrier. Look for one that:
- has no frame of any kind
- opens in more than one place, so we can reach your cat easily
- has mesh sides rather than solid fabric
Dogs
A muzzled dog is not necessarily a bad dog. A muzzle is a tool that keeps the dog and the people giving medical care safe. The Muzzle Up Project has education and training.
